Ofala festival 2025: Onitsha prepares for grand celebration

With the Ofala Festival 2025 approaching, the traditional ceremonies that precede the year’s grand celebration are already in motion, underscoring Onitsha’s enduring commitment to its rich cultural heritage This year’s theme, “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), signals a call for communal resilience as the city honours its royal legacy.
Preliminary rites have begun as communities deepen their preparations for the forthcoming festivities. The season opened with the Owuwaji, or Yam Festival, a time of thanksgiving and a heralding of the celebratory period. The monarch’s annual Spiritual Retreat, known as Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha, follows, during which the king withdraws to seek divine guidance and negotiate the fortunes of the kingdom. Also observed is Ogbalido, the Feast of Atonement, marking the eve of the monarch’s public emergence and reaffirmation of leadership.

As the countdown continues, attention shifts to the two-day grand celebration which includes:
- Iru Ofala (October 17): A day of majesty and splendor dedicated to the monarch and his chiefs, showcasing regal processions, traditional regalia, and ceremonial rites that reaffirm the sovereignty and heritage of Onitsha.\n- Azu Ofala (October 18): Reserved for the people, this day features age-grade displays and vibrant performances as residents pay homage to the monarch, highlighting the city’s living culture and communal solidarity.

This year’s theme, Njiko na Ntachi, emphasizes the importance of unity and perseverance in our community,” stated Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee. “The Ofala Festival is a celebration of our history, our traditions, and our people. We invite everyone to join us and experience the vibrant culture of Onitsha,” he added.
- Event organizers and local leaders invite residents and visitors to participate in the festivities, promising a showcase of Onitsha’s traditional music, dance, attire, and ceremonial rites that have defined the city for generations.
